The Fate of the Yellowstone Grizzly

5.15.2009
BTW, Today is Endangered Species Day!

The following essay snippet was written by Doug Peacock, and is in support of returning Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections to Yellowstone Grizzly Bears.
Some 54 grizzly bears were known to have died in 2008, the highest mortality ever recorded; this number probably exceeds the extensive killings of forty years ago, when Yellowstone National Park closed down its garbage dumps and bears wandered into towns and campgrounds. The Yellowstone grizzly population sharply declined in the early 1970s and, consequently, the bear was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1975.

In 2008, hunters and other humans shot bears in record numbers. People killed grizzlies because they could—sadly, a not uncommon human attitude in the American West—and since Yellowstone’s grizzlies had been removed from the protection of the Endangered Species Act, there were virtually no penalties for shooting them. Bear management had been turned over to the Fish and Game agencies of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana who tend to accept any hunter explanation of self-defense in grizzly country. In short, the grizzlies were easy to kill because their lives were made less valuable by delisting.

Idaho Grizzly Bear Killers Sentenced & Fined: Justice for Bear 346 and Cub

The judge in the case ruled that the bear cub was not killed in self-defense as the defendants claimed. Both men will serve prison time and pay fines and restitution. The nearly $20,000 in restitution will go to the Yellowstone Association to fund grizzly bear management in the region. Hopefully, this will send a clear message that killing grizzly bears will not be tolerated. (Source: Defenders of Wildlife)

Full details about the hunters and bear 346 and her cub...

Personally, I think they got off easy. The fines are chump change to these guys who have elitist ties among the likes of Jim Kelly of the Buffalo Bills.

My Initial Thoughts:

The bowhunter in the article; Dan Walters disgusts me to no end. The mere mention of how he put 1 arrow in and left her to bleed to death overnight, then brag about his valor-filled story to a lodge full of other drunken bowhunters (which include the likes of Jim Kelly, that's right the Buffalo Bills Quarterback) is revolting... for starters.

The local boys; self-proclaimed Grizzly haters Tim Brown, the St. Antony contractor and Brad Hoopes of the same city are a prime example of hostile, uneducated -local lawbreakers. I hope sentencing goes well and these guys get the max - that would be a worthy service to society and the environment.
